A medium to large, ribbed, mid-season, dessert apple with dark red skin and crisp, juicy, sweet flesh which stains red when very ripe. A vigorous grower, cropping in early autumn, fruit storing to late autumn. Requires a group 3, 4 or 5 pollinator. The name is believed to have originated from an incident in late 19th century Scotland when a plougman was shot for stealing apples. His wife threw them onto the rubbish heap; one of the resulting seedlings developed into this cultivar.
